โ€œhastaโ€ as an adverb meaning โ€œevenโ€

The preposition โ€œhastaโ€ can also be an adverb, meaning โ€œeven,โ€ e.g., โ€œHace calor hasta con el ventiladorโ€ (Itโ€™s hot even with the fan).

โ€œporโ€ vs. โ€œparaโ€ meaning โ€œforโ€

Note that both โ€œparaโ€ and โ€œporโ€ can be used to mean โ€œfor.โ€ Differences between the two with examples will be explained in Level III, Lesson 2 on the uses of โ€œporโ€ vs. โ€œpara.โ€

โ€œtrasโ€ vs. โ€œdetrรกsโ€ meaning โ€œbehindโ€

Both โ€œtrasโ€ and โ€œdetrรกsโ€ mean โ€œbehind.โ€ However, โ€œdetrรกsโ€ is more widely used in daily conversations, whereas โ€œtrasโ€ is found mostly in formal writing.

Also, โ€œdetrรกsโ€ can be used as an adverb, e.g., โ€œMira detrรกsโ€ (Look behind), whereas โ€œtrasโ€ cannot be used as an adverb.

For instance, we can say โ€œMira tras la sillaโ€ (Look behind the chair), but we cannot say โ€œMira trasโ€ without it being followed by a noun.

Expressing the meaning of โ€œaboutโ€

To express the meaning of โ€œaboutโ€ (e.g., to talk about someone or watch a documentary about something), we often use โ€œsobreโ€ or โ€œacerca de.โ€

For example:

Vi un documental sobre la guerra.I watched a documentary about the war.
Leรญ un libro acerca de la vida en Japรณn.I read a book about life in Japan.

In some contexts, we could use โ€œdeโ€ to mean โ€œabout,โ€ for example:

Ellos hablan de รฉl.They talk about him.
Quiero leer un libro de ciencia.I want to read a book about science.
